As a collaborative trainer, Elizabeth will provide the same content as Leah Kuypers at on-site Zones of Regulation workshops. Information is presented to help attendees understand challenging behaviors while providing background information on self-regulation. This includes how self-regulation typically develops and insights on the underlying deficits that may be impacting ones ability to regulate, such as sensory processing, emotional regulation, social cognition, and executive functioning. In regards to The Zones curriculum, strategies are taught to support students in becoming more aware of and independent in controlling their emotions and impulses, managing their sensory needs and improving their ability to problem solve conflicts. Practical implementation ideas are provided that can easily be incorporated into the classroom or home. Presentations are geared to train professionals from multiple disciplines whom work with students to support social-emotional development (teachers, therapists, administrators, etc...) but are also applicable for parents. Please refer to and complete the workshop request if you are interested in moving forward with a Zones workshop.
Elizabeth began her career working at a school with severely impaired children who had behavioral challenges. In this school, she spent eight years as part of a collaborative team whose members worked to increase functional communication with the goal of decreasing negative behavior. After having her own children, Elizabeth followed her professional passion for supporting those with social, self-regulation, and executive functioning challenges and started CW, a center that specializes in providing speech, language, and social regulation therapy for individuals and groups. Following the needs of the clients and community, she began to provide parent trainings, school consultation, summer camps, and social hangouts in order to support the whole child, family, and community needs. CW is also a non-public agency (NPA) providing services to public and private schools, and Elizabeth supervises, consults, trains, and supports program development at these schools and other organizations.
In 2009 Leah Kuypers reached out to Elizabeth when Leah was moving to the Bay Area and looking for a job. After meeting Leah, learning about her professional experience, and reviewing the Zones of Regulation ® (Zones) curriculum (which was not yet published), Elizabeth knew that she wanted to work with Leah and have her on the CW team. Because behavior and self-regulation are the foundation of social and academic success, Leah’s expertise was invaluable. Infusing the systematic, formalized framework of the Zones into the Center and creating a multi-disciplinary team brought a substantial benefit to clients at the CW Center and in local Bay Area schools. Elizabeth treasured the chance to collaborate with Leah to develop support for clients, conduct trainings for parents/caregivers and professionals, and work on various writing projects. After Leah’s move back to Minnesota, they remained close and continued to regularly collaborate on professional projects. They have co-authored the Zones learning game (coming soon) and Elizabeth has continued to be a champion The Zones on the west coast. Elizabeth is delighted to join Leah and Terri as a collaborative speaker and be able to connect with and train other groups passionate about embedding self-regulation and social emotional learning into their practices. Elizabeth has also co-authored two popular children’s books with Kristen Wilson, Whole Body Listening Larry at Home and Whole Body Listening Larry at School (www.socialthinking.com), which help to break down what is expected and ways to keep others feeling comfortable in a listening situation. She has also published Make Social and Emotional Learning Stick! (aapcpublishing.com), which provides 185 ideas for embracing teachable moments in the home and community to practice and build social and emotional skills. She also offers training on this information. Elizabeth thrives on learning from others and gaining professional training in the areas of social cognition, self-regulation, and executive functioning. She has completed a mentorship and internship with Michelle Garcia Winner, Stephanie Madrigal, and Pamela Crooke. She has attended the Social Thinking Providers conference yearly since it began in 2007, presented at three of the conferences, and regularly contributes to the professional community. She has also been trained by Mindful Schools (http://www.mindfulschools.org) and teaches yoga in the classroom setting. In addition, Elizabeth enjoys training and presenting to parents and educators in the US and Canada and sharing practical strategies and learning tools. In her blog MakeSocialLearningStick, she shares her own parenting and life experiences raising two boys. She also blogs for Communication Works and has written many articles over the years. Elizabeth is a member of American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), California Speech-Language-Hearing Association, and the American Academy of Private Practice in Speech Pathology and Audiology (AAPPSPA). On a personal note, Elizabeth is a sister, cousin and mom of those who learn and develop differently which has made her work a lifelong endeavor. She lives with her husband, two sons, dog, and cat who all teach her new life lessons and keep her smiling. |
